ROAD TRIP PLANNING

Planning a Road Trip Can be Fun and Adventurous!

How To Plan a Road Trip

Taking a road trip can be fun; and to plan your road trip endeavor, you need a travelling checklist. First things first:
Make sure your car or mode of transportation is gased, tires checked, and has been properly serviced: Also, bring extra coin for tolls in Canada or United States (for USA make sure you have american bills for their tolls and American coin for the parking meters cuz the American meters do not accept Canadian coin)

Plan Your Day

You need a travel date, choose a time that fits your lifestyle and leave extra time for those things that could happen. If your planning a day trip allow a few extra hours, and if your planning a two or three day trip allow an extra half day.

What's the Weather

Once you've decided on your travel day(s), you need to see if the weather is going to be favorable for your road trip travelling time. You may like a nice day for your adventure or perhaps a part cloudy day would suffice as well.

What to Bring

Of course, Food! - no road trip would be complete without the road trip goodies, be it junk food (only cuz your on vacation), sandwiches, chips, pop, and for the more healthy food eaters - vege snacks, bottled water and the like. Bring along a cooler for your food and drinks. You can make your own ice (ice cube trays freezer) if using a smaller cooler, or grab a bag of ice when gasing your car for a larger cooler.

Ice cost around $2.50, (Canada) and usually last a good 15 or so hours. If your travelling in the northeastern states (maine) their ice cost about the same although their ice bags were a tad smaller than canadas and didn't last quite as long.

It's good to make your own food for travelling to your destination cuz you can avoid time delays, (get their quicker) and you can pick and choose where to stop and eat (road trip sightseeing) or not. Not to mention, you can save money by making your own sandwiches, and meals for your roadtrip.

You should also have extra blankets (especially if its an overnight trip and camping) jackets, (rain jackets), lanterns, flashlight, matches, all your camping gear of course, camera, camera batteries, extra camera batteries, tripods, towels, toilet paper (camping and reststops), maps for your destination and sightseeing places along the way. You can buy road trip maps at most gas outlets for a reasonable price, usually around $5.00, and you can also use google maps to find, plan, and route your destination, and then print those from your computer, tablet or mobile device.

Rest Stops

Taking a rest from driving is always a good idea, especially if your driving a great distance. After 4-5 hours of driving, you'll usually need road trip gas, so it's a good time to stretch your legs and have a drink. There are also rest stops along the highways, like i-95 in the usa, has plenty of road trip areas to stop, and most have washrooms and many have retail gas outlets and food shops. The trans canada highway also has some rest stops along its route. In both countries, the rest stops are signed a couple kilometers (miles) before their exits.

USA Travel

Travelling to the United States for a roadtrip has a few must mentons - firstly bring your Passport canada, because you'll need one at the border crossing. At the border stop going into the United States they will ask for your passport(s) and then usually ask you a few questions about yourself (if your work what you do), how long you plan to be in the usa and your planned travel destination, and then ask you a couple questons about whats in your vehicle like "do you have firearms" (yeah i got a couple of ready and armed missiles) and do you have certain kinds of fruit (citrus fruits not allowed into the states).

Cameras and the like - if you have cameras, especially expensive ones (over 100 say) that you are bringing with you, you can stop on the Canadian side at the border and declare them, that way the USA border cannot say you purchased them in USA (when returning to canada), You can do this for anything expensive that you have a concern with. They mark the info onto a little form and give you a copy to keep (your proof). You only have to show it to the USA border upon returning to Canada if they ask you.
