Features: Point and Shoot Cameras

On this page(and links from) you can read about Point and Shoot Camera Brands.

New Models vs Old Models

In our listed cameras; you will see many cameras with the 'replaced' designation. We mention these because many times older models of a newer model can be a tad cheaper to purchase. And, depending on the upgraded features, if any, (sometimes minimal changes) you could be just as happy with buying an older model and saving money.
Where available, we added the year the camera was introduced for sale, and the price now for the 'replaced' model; if we were able to find it at Amazon.ca.

Unlike smartphones, cameras generally experience a longer marketing and retail lifespan which makes them more appealing for getting deals.

Since this website is mostly about point and shoot cameras, our camera reviews offer details on the many point and shoot models from each popular camera brand and also lesser known ones. We will also mention a few DSLR cameras.

We should mention that point and shoot cameras; including some mirrorless cameras are also known as 'compact cameras'. This is because of their streamlined size and ability to be easy to use without knowing much about cameras.

Mirrorless cameras cost more than most point and shoots because they incorporate a lot of features usually found on the higher priced and more professional styled DSLR cameras. The most unique feature being that you can swap out lenses.

So, if you were new to photography and wanted to grow your camera arsenal(lenses), but also wanted the simplicity of a smaller(easier to carry around) but feature rich camera; a mirrorless camera might be a good choice.

Depending on the brand; mirrorless camera prices can range from $400 - $2000, or more. And, non mirrorless point and shoot camera prices can span $100 - $1200.
DSLR cameras are overall pricier, with pricing from $400 - $20,000, or more. The expense with DSLR is usually in lense prices. The DSLR body (no lense) is comparative to high end priced point and shoots with Base models costing around $400 -$500; again this varies by brand.
If you don't have a preference for the smaller sized body like a point and shoot, then a DSLR could be a better choice as you can add lenses and customize based on your shooting style as a photographer.
Also, the mirrorless lense choices for mirrorless cameras are becoming as common to purchase as DSLR lenses. For most brands, you simply add an adapter which allows for a greater selection from their DSLR lense choices.

Point and shoot cameras do not have 'swap out lenses'; however, both DSLR and mirrorless cameras are equally customizable; which probably leaves most asking; "Why would I want to carry a chunkier camera around if I can carry a compact one that basically offers the same features and the option to swap out lenses?"
The answer most professional photographers would give is probably because of the 'full frame image sensor' that is unique to DSLRs. This feature is not matched in any mirrorless or point and shoot cameras. The 'full frame sensor' for a simple explanation, provides a more professional photo image in most photo shoot scenarios, especially low light, because it can allow more light into the camera.
Each camera maker brand has its' own technology to try and compensate for this in their smaller compact models and definite improvements have been made which is great for consumers who prefer a small sized camera that includes big pro camera features.

Many times, a DSLR camera and mirrorless cameras includes the base lens;(depends on brand also) typically a 18-55 lens, and sells as a package deal. And, as with all cameras, look for deals, because many times these can include goodies like a camera bag, filters, tripod, cards, cloths; and for not much more money.

Nitty Gritty

Camera brand websites don't often include the nitty gritty about cameras on their websites when promoting their camera models. It is more of a Snapshot of the cameras features; it doesn't often give the Big Picture, of the camera's capabilities, which is also good to know. You can go researching for the camera specs but it is a tad tedious not to mention time consuming, especially when camera shopping, and your looking at numerous models.

Camera Features

Unlike many Camera Review websites that provide summaries and their expert opinions based on their camera know how, our Camera Model Reviews we be more feature based, with specific details on what the camera has onboard feature wise.
This is always a good place to start when deciding what Point and Shoot Camera to buy. Look for features that will enhance what you what your camera for.
Someone who wants a camera for mostly occasional indoor shots, probably isn't concerned if the camera has a good focal length, whereas someone whose an outdoor adventurer and enjoys shooting wildlife would rather the telephoto capability and a fast autofocus.

So, before you venture to purchase your camera ask yourself what features you want. Reading the features available for the various models will provide good info on what cameras can do. From that, you'll be better informed for selecting a camera for yourself. And, you'll learn a lot about cameras.

Price Points

We included pricing for the cameras as well.
If we found the camera at more than one retail website, then you'll see a Price Range with prices low to high. If the camera was found at only one website or pricing at two or more websites was mostly identical, then we show one price.

For researching, we use popular retail websites like BestBuy, Amazon, Walnart, BPPhoto(bhphotovideo.com), and Staples. Prices we show are Canadian, unless stated otherwise.

When buying online it is best to research several websites for your selected camera model because prices can vary considerably. And, also factor in shipping because this can add to your camera's overall price if shipping is not included.

Popular Brands

Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji, Canon, Kodak are probably the most well known brands for cameras. Others include Rioch, Olympus, Sony, Samsung. We'll add reviews for point and shoot cameras from these Camera Brands.

Inexpensive point and shoots include brands like Vivitar and Polaroid, which are usually available at most online websites we mentioned, and retail stores like Walmart and Best Buy.

Because they are low priced these types of cameras do not include many features found on pricier brands. However, for those on a budget, their point and shoot cameras are an inexpensive option.
